A plea for fair taxes from the next generation
Dear Mr. President, Hon. Harry Reid, and Hon. John Boehner,
As young philanthropists and social entrepreneurs who will inherit the policies you create, we urge you to put our country ahead of politics.
We the undersigned know that social entrepreneurship can harness the power of the market to address many of the social ills of our time. We believe in giving back to our community and in the power of philanthropy to save and transform people’s lives.
We also know that social entrepreneurship and philanthropy cannot replace the fundamental role of our government to provide for the basic needs of all people. That is why the creation of a fair and balanced tax code will have a greater impact on the issues we care about – like education, health care, and the environment -- than all of our business innovations and acts of philanthropy combined.
The failure to enact a fair and balanced tax code could compromise our generation’s capacity to achieve the kind of American Dream that has been our Nation’s proud historical promise.
For the fiscal health of our nation and the well-being of our fellow citizens, we ask that you increase taxes on the wealthiest Americans.
Our country faces a choice – we can pay our debts and build for the future, or we can shirk our financial responsibilities and cripple our nation’s potential.
Please do the right thing for our country. Raise our taxes.
Sincerely,
Matthew Palevsky
